During my first year at the University of Colorado at Boulder, I became fascinated with the topic of self defense. I created a final project for a class around the subject. After submitting my work to my professor, I shortly got an email saying I should submit it to a Writing and Rhetoric First-Year Writing Contest. Without any hesitation, I submitted and expected to never hear back. Fortunately, I did hear a response - and a great one at that. I had won first place on my piece about how we should incorporate free self defense classes on campus. I felt amazing, especially since podcasts weren't and still aren't my typical media format.
